🏪 LOCAL SPOTLIGHT

Market Brewing Company — Newmarket
A community craft brewery on Leslie Street that doubles as a bingo hall and one of York Region's busiest event spaces.

Market Brewing opened its taproom in 2017 and reset its focus in 2019 around community programming rather than beer alone. The weekly calendar runs Tuesday trivia, Thursday bingo and live music on Friday nights with no cover, and there are always at least ten beers on tap alongside Ernest ciders and its non-alcoholic Fancy Sparkling Water line. There is no kitchen, so the room leans on food trucks and lets you bring your own food, and leashed dogs are welcome. Its beers also turn up at the LCBO, the Beer Store and golf courses around the region.

🏡 HOMEOWNER CORNER

Markham flood rebate needs sign-off before you start
Markham's Private Plumbing Protection Rebate Program helps owners in flood-prone areas offset backwater valves, sump pumps with weeping-tile disconnection, and lateral relining, but you must get written pre-approval from the Environmental Services Department before any work begins, or the rebate is lost. The City has also flagged a scam: it never calls or visits homeowners directly to inspect or install these devices, so treat any such contact as suspect and call Markham Waterworks at 905-477-5530. Building permits for eligible work must be obtained by April 30, 2027, and rebate applications are due July 31, 2027. To start, email [email protected] for the technical review form; Vaughan residents have a separate, smaller backwater-valve subsidy through Building Standards.

📍 AROUND THE REGION

Richmond Hill: The City held a statutory public open house on its Official Plan Update at the McConaghy Centre on June 11, with a Council public meeting scheduled for June 23 (City of Richmond Hill). City of Richmond Hill

Vaughan: York Region road rehabilitation begins this month on Pine Valley Drive between Highway 7 and Langstaff Road, and on Teston Road from Dufferin Street to Bathurst Street, with lane impacts into the fall (York Region road construction schedule).

York Region: The Region is converting the Black River Road and Park Road intersection in Georgina from a two-way to an all-way stop in June under its Vision Zero Traveller Safety Plan (York Region).
